Developing Requirements for Surgical Simulations

October 1, 2003

Suzanne Weghorst, PhD Human Interface Technology Laboratory (HITLab) University of Washington

As a challenging and potentially risky procedure, endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is a prime candidate for VR simulation training.

Weghorst, a Senior Research Scientist and Assistant Director for Research, presents an on-going research effort at the University of Washington HITLab surrounding the construction and evaluation of an ESS simulator. Her talk describes the varied requirements of the project from creating compelling user experiences for novice, intermediate, and expert level surgeons to the correlation between performance on the simulator and performance in the operating room.
