This half-day tutorial will provide students with design principles that
they can put to use in their work as user experience designers and
evaluators. We will look at principles used by graphic designers, web
designers, and dynamic display designers. A multitude of real-world
examples will be used to illustrate the principles, both positive and
negative, until participants are able to identify and work with the
concepts presented.
These design principles can be used to explain to clients why design
choices were made or how to improve on current designs. There is no
"silver bullet" when it comes to design, so the more principles from varied
disciplines we investigate, the more tools we'll have at our disposal for
that next design or evaluation.
This tutorial is perfect for:
- People who wish to add to their knowledge of design principles
- People interested in looking at design principles outside of their discipline.
About the speaker
Susan Palmiter has 10 years of experience consulting with start-up firms to
Fortune 100 corporations in the areas of user interface design, customer
requirements definition, product planning, usability walkthroughs and
testing, and process improvement. Her latest interests include the use of
scenarios and design rationale to both inform and communicate the customer-informed design throughout the product lifecycle. Susan is a founder of
Design Technologies, Inc, and an Adjunct Professor in the Computer Science
Department at Portland State University where she teaches a graduate course
titled Introduction to Human-Computer Interaction. She holds a BS in Computer Science from Ohio State University and an MS
and PhD in Human Factors Engineering from The University of Michigan.
Susan is a contributing member to the ACM's SIGCHI (Special Interest Group
on Computer-Human Interaction) and the local CHIFOO (Computer-Human
Interaction Forum of Oregon). She has numerous publications related to
Human Computer Interaction.
Prior to the founding of Design Technologies, she worked in the
Customer-Centered Research & Design Group in Tektronix Laboratories. While
there, Susan was awarded the 1993 Tektronix President's Award for the
customer-centered methods she developed and championed to inform product
designs that are successful in the marketplace.
Susan was a key contributor to a team that developed an early multimedia
intranet in 1993. This intranet served as a repository for customer
centered research and as a means of disseminating research results to a
broad audience. She continues to be actively involved in web site design
and evaluation.
